Metallographic examinations

Microscope

These examinations include macrographic and micrographic examinations, performed with or without metallographic etching, on all types of metallic materials (steels, cast iron, aluminium alloys, copper alloys, magnesium alloys, etc.).

The purpose of these examinations is to qualitatively and/or quantitatively characterise the microstructures of the alloys. Quantitative characterisation is achieved by comparison with standard images or with the applicable standards.

Macro and micrographic examinations

Lamellar graphite cast iron

Micrographic examinations are undertaken in particular to:
  • Characterise microstructures
  • Determine the size of a microstructure (e.g. DAS measurement)
  • Analyse defects
  • Measure the thickness of coatings
  • Determine the grain size
  • Determine the proportion by volume of a constituent

Image analysis

Automatic analysis of a large number of measurement fields, is used in order to determine:
  • The proportions of the phases (proportion of ferrite in pearlito-ferritic matrix cast iron or in austeno-ferritic steels etc.)
  • The shape and the surface of the graphite nodules in spherical-graphite cast iron
  • The SIM measurement of aluminium alloys
  • The degree of porosity
