Physical tests

CTIF performs a certain number of physical tests.

Dilatometric analysis (true method)

Dilatomètre

The test principle is based upon studying the variation in the length of a test-piece with respect to temperature. The processing of the data is computerised.

Dilatometric analysis is used in particular to determine:
  • Transformation points
  • Expansion coefficients

Heat treatment

Test-pieces or parts are submitted to specified heat treatment cycles, according to the mechanical or structural properties to be achieved.

The ovens installed at CTIF are capable of providing heat treatment with or without inert atmospheres, in vacuum, in salt baths, in fluidised beds. CTIF is able to perform quenching in water, in oil, in forced convection, austempering.

Micro hardness testing

This test is undertaken in order to:
  • Characterise a metallic coating
  • Characterise the hardness of certain constituents
  • Study phenomena such as superficial decarburisation
  • étudier des phénomènes comme la décarburation superficielle.

Density measurement

Density measurement

Density measurement is performed by the double weight method: in air and in water.

Density measurement can be used to determine the degree of porosity (or the gas content) in materials.

Thermal analysis

CTIF is equipped to undertake determinations by thermal analysis of the liquidus and solidus of metals and alloys.

These tests are performed following an estimate according to the operating conditions.
